Accreditation turnaround · New program launch
Accreditation Withheld: SI Turnaround and Program Launch
- Client
- Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC)
- Situation
- Engaged after Sponsoring Institution accreditation was withheld by ACGME
- Services
- Accreditation & compliance, institutional & program development, program operations
Challenge
Physicians and healthcare professionals are trained to care for patients, not to build accredited educational programs. Accreditation has its own language, standards, and expectations, and it isn't one most clinical leaders speak fluently. When this FQHC pursued Sponsoring Institution status, that gap meant the ACGME withheld accreditation. Without an approved Sponsoring Institution, the health center could not move forward with its goal of establishing a residency program to train and retain physicians in a medically underserved community.
Approach
- Conducted a full review of the withheld Sponsoring Institution application to identify the gaps that led to denial.
- Rewrote the Sponsoring Institution application and revised institutional policies to bring them into full compliance with ACGME requirements.
- Resubmitted the Sponsoring Institution application for ACGME review.
- Directed development of the full Family Medicine residency program application, including curriculum, structure, and supporting documentation.
- Continue assisting client operationalize the newly approved program, building infrastructure, staffing, and systems.
